Pride Shabbat

A Very Special Pride Shabbat

Eric Jaffe, Philly’s own Drag Queen of the Year in 2019, will be our guest at a very special Pride Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday, July 17. The service will begin at 7:00 pm and feature special poetry and music in honor of Pride Shabbat. Then, we’ll be treated to a 45 minute cabaret performance called “Oy vey, I’m Gay!” It’s about coming out and being a queer Jewish person, and features a mix of original music and parody music from Fiddler on the Roof, Yentl and other Jewish pop culture.

In preparation for Pride Shabbat, we will be co-creating a special, unique offering based on our experiences of Pride. All OH members (past and present… and those raised in the OH community who may now live far away) are invited to participate in this project by completing this brief survey: http://tiny.cc/OHPrideSurvey

Eric Jaffe grew up in Elkins Park and celebrated their Bar Mitzvah at Beth Sholom. In an interview with the Jewish Exponent, Jaffe credits their Jewish background and family for their sense of humor. Jaffe said, “We were a big loud Jewish family and a lot of my humor stems from that.” Jaffe’s parents, who died before they began performing as a Drag Queen, always told them to “just be themself,” an important message that resonates on Pride Shabbat. Eric Jaffe is confident that they would have liked this show.
