Lifelong Learning
Because Reconstructionists define Judaism as a civilization encompassing history, literature, language, art and music, it is through the study of all of these aspects of Jewish life that we discover and delight in the fullness of our heritage.
A lifelong commitment to Jewish education is a hallmark of our congregation. Our creative and dynamic religious school goes beyond teaching basic knowledge and skills. It sparks our children’s curiosity and encourages them to find their own place in Judaism. Or Hadash and the Reconstructionist Movement are at the forefront of family education, developing programs that engage parents and children together. Varied and provocative adult education programming further expands our opportunities for Jewish learning and living, and encourages our appreciation of Judaism’s beliefs and practices. We strive to create educational experiences for people of all ages that are personally meaningful…and joyful.
Adult Education
Innovative and diverse adult education programming is a core component of the Or Hadash community and is largely provided through the Adult Education Committee, which is a volunteer-run committee open to anyone at Or Hadash. Adult Education at Or Hadash includes seminars and guest speakers, multi-part courses (often initiated by congregants), and film/book discussions. We have also participated in dialogue sessions dealing with the Israel/Palestine conflict, as well as educational programs related to the One Book, One Jewish Community program. See the attachments below for information on upcoming programs.
Adult Study Havurah
The Adult Study Havurah was one of the first to be formed at Or Hadash by adults who wanted to explore and discuss varied topics of Jewish interest. The group meets monthly, on Sunday morning, at the synagogue.
Initially, the group chooses a broad theme to research. Members may select a more specific topic within that theme. At meetings, participants present their findings and lead the discussions. Sometimes, one session is sufficient; other times, questions arise and the discussion extends into a second meeting. Over the years, the Adult Study Havurah has explored a wide range of subjects, including: various groups within Judaism, Islam, Jesus, the Prophets, relationships with G-d, Jewish meditation, Jews and punishment, kashrut, and the Reconstructionist concept of choseness.
