Shedding New Light on Jewish Traditions

Guest Speaker

Please join us for a conversation with Davis Mac-Iyalla entitled "A Terrible Use of the Good Book".  We are honored to welcome Davis Mac-Iyalla to our congregation.  Mac-Iyalla is a Nigerian LGBT activist and recipient of the Bishop Desmond Tutu Award for Human Rights and Social Justice from the World Pride and Power Organization.  He will be speaking about the discrimination faced by LGBT people in Nigeria and how the Bible is used as a tool to condemn homosexuality.

His visit, as part of our Shabbat services, will be one of the ways we express the core Sukkot theme of hospitality - of welcoming guests into our home and also trying to ensure that all places can become hospitable and welcoming for people of all backgrounds.

Mac-Iyalla will talk about the Bible and how religious leaders have misused and interpreted it against LGBT people.  He will speak about his faith and sexuality and why he believes it's bad theology to use the Bible as a tool to condemn homosexuality.
