Shedding New Light on Jewish Traditions

Marty Jacobs Story

Marty Jacobs Reflects on Or Hadash

Irene and I joined Or Hadash when we moved to Fort Washington from New Hampshire in 2001, just before the High Holidays. It was right after Rabbi Vivian retired, but I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a participant in a series of classes she taught as Rabbi Emerita – Trope Troupe, a class on Biblical Hebrew, and an evening Torah Study group that she started, which still continues to meet. I have also been a regular attendee at Saturday morning Torah Study and services, both of which I have enjoyed very much – especially in the last few years under Rabbi Josh’s guidance.

I joined the Ritual Committee (now the Spiritual Life Committee) in 2006 and chaired the committee from 2008 until earlier this year. During that time, I was privileged to work with a dedicated group of committee members who accomplished a number of innovations:

Shabbat Schmooze

Shabbat-in-the-Park

Yule at the Shul/Chanukah Service

Mussar Program

Major participants in moving High Holiday Services to Or Hadash

Acquisition of two Torah scrolls

I look forward to continuing to participate in a variety of activities at Or Hadash.
